September 2017 News
Sunday September 17 walk
We begin our second year of monthly walks this coming Sunday. As usual we will meet at Burley Station at 10.00. There is no need to book. Dogs are welcome on lead as long as owners have the appropriate insurance cover.
The 4.5 mile route takes us through the fields towards Stead then climbs gradually towards the Moor. Keeping below Moor Road we will use the paths cleared and brought back into use by our June working party. Making our way down to the edge of Ben Rhydding we will have a short stop at Clevedon House for refreshments.
To return we drop down then along the A65 for a short distance before following the paths to the Sun Lane nature reserve and back into the village. Paths are becoming muddy after recent rain and there will be some stretches of long grass. So please come with appropriate footwear. There are two gap stiles, two stone step stiles and one ladder stile on the route.
Summer Festival walks
Thank you to everyone who came on one or more of our 11 festival walks. During the week we had 141 walkers who made 211 walks in all, which surpassed our expectations.
We would welcome any further feedback to add to that already given to the Festival Committee to help us plan our programme for 2018. Email us if you would like to comment on any aspect of the festival walks.
Several of the walks included a stop for refreshments at Bleach Mill House. Sales during the Festival week generated a contribution of £197 towards the Teenage Cancer Trust. So there is big thank you from Sue Richardson to everyone for their generosity.
Damage to livestock by dogs and litter
Those of us who went on the walk ‘Walking with a farmer’ heard a quite graphic account from Jo Foster about the damage done to her family’s livestock by dogs off lead and out of control in the fields between Burley and Menston.
She also explained how dangerous ingesting plastic waste left as litter can be for cattle and sheep.
We are fortunate in Burley to have so many attractive field footpaths most of which are not fenced in even where the area is actively farmed. Let’s help keep it that way by making sure paths stay litter free and dogs are on leads wherever livestock is in the vicinity. Please also encourage others to do the same.
Yet More Rambles from the Roundhouse
A reminder to look out for and hopefully buy our third walking leaflet which is now on sale around the village (at the Hermit, Cohen the Chemist, the Coffee Station, and AM /PM Mini-Mart). Also at bookshops in Ilkley and Otley. Leaflet sales give us a regular source of income to pay for our insurance costs, leader training etc.
Forthcoming Walks
The walk on Sunday October 15th will be on the eastern side of the village calling at Bleach Mill for refreshments. More details to follow.
Future walks will be:
November 19, December 17, January 21, February 18, March 18
