December 2020
With the end of national lockdown, we can now restart guided walks, following the guidelines for organised outdoor activities. Our first walk will be a longer walk on Sunday 27 December with 3 and 5 mile walks to follow in January.
The current rules for all tiers allow for up to 30 people to take part in an organised walk. To be sure everyone is kept safe we have decided for now to keep to a maximum of 18 per walk, with booking in advance. There will be a waiting list, so please let us know as soon as you can if you book a place then can’t come. You will not need to wear a mask when walking, but please make sure that you maintain social distancing with others in the group and with any walkers and runners we meet. Dogs on all our walks are allowed unless otherwise stated, as long as owners have the required insurance.
Longer walk on Sunday 27 December
Simon Archer will lead an 8 mile walk around the Burley Parish boundary. Starting at Burley Station at 10.00, the walk follows the old railway line to Otley Golf Course. Passing by Launds House Farm, we cross over the A65 then take the river path to Burley Weir. After a short distance along the A65 we walk along Sun Lane, cross the railway then climb up to Stead. Following Moor Road, we take the Dales Way link footpath to Hag Farm then walk alongside Carr Beck to arrive back at the station by early afternoon. Bring your own refreshments for a short break en-route. To book a place contact [email protected].
Friday 8 January 2021 – Menston circular
This is a 3 mile low level walk to Menston, originally planned for November. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00. We aim to be back in the village by 12.00.
After crossing the new bridge, we follow Coldstone Beck through fields to Bleach Mill Lane. This takes us into Menston before returning to Burley via Menston Old Lane, field paths and the old railway line. The route is mainly level but likely to be quite muddy in places. There are a number of gates including the latest kissing gate but no stiles.
Future walks
Information about how to book the following walks will be given in the next newsletter.
Sunday 17 January 2021 – Antiquarian landmarks on Burley Moor
Friday 5 February 2021 – A riverside ramble
Sunday 21 February 2021 – Westward Ho! – A walk towards Ben Rhydding
Footpath maintenance and improvements
As you may have found, some very muddy areas have developed on the new footpath between the two cattle arches on the south side of the railway line, especially around the re-positioned bridge. Agreement has been reached with the landowner and Bradford Council for us to improve this area. Unfortunately we will have to wait for the ground to be either dry or frosty enough to transport quite a quantity of stone chippings to the site. Let us know if you would like to join the group of volunteers needed to tackle this task in the new year. According to current restrictions we would be working in socially distanced groups of 6.
Peak and Northern Footpath sign
At the junction of the two footpaths from Burley to Menston (adjacent to the Menston cattle arch and kissing gate), you will now find a rather fine traditional iron sign provided by the Peak and Northern Footpath Society. You can come across these signs in various locations across the north of England and they are all individually numbered.

Support Burley’s cafés!
Burley seems to be developing quite a café culture. Welcome to both the newly opened Cockpit Farm café at Burley Grange and to Arlo’s on Main Street which opened not so long ago. There is also of course the well-established Wharfedale Deli on Main Street.
Further from the village you can find the Curlew Café on the road to Hawksworth, sited close to a circular walk to Reva Reservoir from Burley (in the brown ‘Five More Rambles’ leaflet). Please support all our hospitality businesses when you can during this difficult time for them.
Burley Walkers are Welcome website
A reminder that our website has lots of ideas for walking from the village as well as a collection of photographs through the seasons.
