Burley Summer Festival Walks Programme 2022

All walks are bookable with 28 places on each, except the Sunday 29 August walk which is open to all. Booking in person opens on Saturday 30 July between 10.00 and 1.00pm at the Roundhouse. Saturday August 20 - Tour and tasting at Ilkley Brewery
4.5 or 8 miles 4.5 or 6 hrs Moderate Linear or circular

Depart: 9.30 am Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
Walk from Burley for a tour and tasting at Ilkley Brewery with the option of walking back to Burley. The outward leg will follow field paths to Ben Rhydding, then to Ilkley Brewery along the riverside path. There will be a tour of the Brewery by Sales Manager Marco Cilenti followed by tasting from the current range of beers on offer. There will be an opportunity for a picnic lunch on site. Those walking back from Burley will visit Ben Rhydding and Sun Lane Nature Reserves.

Monday August 22 - The Yorkshire Heritage Way, Stage 3: Burley to Thruscross

Walk the Yorkshire Heritage Way to Thruscross. If the stepping stones are unsafe to cross, the alternative route via Denton Bridge will be used. The route crosses remote Askwith Moor with extensive views before visiting the attractive hill top hamlet of Timble. Dropping down to Blubberhouses, the picturesque Washburn Valley is followed to Thruscross Reservoir where mini bus transport will return walkers to Burley. No dogs please unless providing own transport from Thruscross. Bring a picnic lunch

Monday August 22 - Hawksworth
7.5 miles 4.5 hrs Moderate Circular

Depart: 10.30 am Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
The route will follow field paths and tracks to Menston, then to High Royds Hall and along the slopes of Odda Hill. There will be a refreshment stop at Curlew Café, Hawkworth, and a return to Burley over Hawksworth and Burley Moors via Reva Reservoir and Intake Gate.

Tuesday August 23 – High Royds Memorial Garden and Chapel
6 miles 4 hrs Easy Circular

Depart: 9.30 am Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
A walk to Menston along footpaths and tracks to visit the award winning High Royds Memorial Garden, Chapel and adjacent woodland. We will hear from Dr Ron Sweeney, Chair of the Friends Group about the restoration work undertaken by the group over the past ten years to commemorate the lives of the 2861 patients from the High Royds Psychiatric Hospital that are buried there. Walking back to Burley through Menston, we will stop at Bleach Mill for refreshments.

Tuesday August 23 - Marton Mills, Wharfedale’s last working textile mill
4.5 miles 2.5 hrs Moderate Linear

Depart: 2.30pm Meet at: Jubilee Clock, Otley Market Place
The walk will follow field paths from Otley to Pool in Wharfedale arriving at Marton Mills by 5.00 pm. Please bring a picnic tea. We will have a guided tour of the mill from 6pm taking approximately 1 ½ hours. Mini-bus transport will then be provided to return the group back to either Otley or Burley. No dogs please. Please bring refreshments.

Wednesday August 24 - Trees of Burley
1.5 miles 2 hrs Easy Circular

This is a short walk for those people who wish to improve their identification of trees, common and not so common, learn about their contribution to wildlife, and see what varieties we have growing in and around the centre of the village including Grange Park, the Village Green, and Burley House field.

Wednesday August 24 - Otley Wetlands Nature Reserve

Depart: 1.00 Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
A walk to visit Otley Wetlands Nature Reserve which is not normally open to the public. The reserve consists of water areas, recently planted woodland and reed beds. It hosts many varieties of mammals, birds, insects and flora. We will follow a low level route to Otley across fields with some road walking. On reaching the reserve we will have a guided tour with one of the Trustees. The walk will finish at the Reserve at about 4.30. No dogs please.

Thursday August 25 - Burley History walk
1 mile 2.5 hrs Easy Circular

Depart: 9.30 Meet at: Meet at the entrance to Burley House
This village history walk lead by historian Stephen Caunce, will be split into two sections with a half way refreshment break at Cockpit Farm Tea Rooms. The first half, starting at Burley House, will look at evidence of the development of the village through public buildings such as schools and churches. After a break, the second half will look at evidence of the commercial development of the village. The walk will refer to the recently revised and republished Burley History Trail leaflet available from Burley Library.

Thursday August 25 - Archaeology on Burley Moor
3 miles 3.5 hrs Moderate Linear
Leader: Dr. Keith Boughey
Depart: 1.30pm Meet at: Burley Woodhead Village Green, top of Moor Lane
The walk will visit some of the lower level archaeological sites on Burley Moor. Dr Keith Boughey a local historian and expert on the Bronze Age who has researched and written extensively on the subject, will lead the walk and provide detailed information about the sites. The walk will be on field paths, tracks and across rough open moor, and may be varied according to weather conditions. Sensible footwear and clothing essential. Finish by 4.30 / 5.00. Refreshments will be available at the Hermit Inn at the end of the walk. No dogs please.

Friday August 26 - Weston Stone Garden
5 miles 5hrs Moderate Circular

Depart: 10.00am Meet at: Jubilee Clock, Otley Market Place
This is a special opportunity to visit the stone garden created by local art collector Ronnie Duncan. Developed over a twenty year period, the various sculptures and creations commissioned by Ronnie are intended to subordinate horticulture to stone (although there is also an occasional plant!). There will also be an opportunity to talk with Ronnie about his broader art collection. The walk up to Weston will be on field paths, tracks and lanes via Clifton, returning via meadows and Weston Lane. Please bring a picnic lunch to have in the garden. No dogs please.
Cost: £1.00 for a copy of the garden guide. A donation to the Ronnie Duncan Art Foundation supporting new artists and artistic developments will also be possible.

Friday August 26 - Night Walk
5 miles 3 hrs Strenuous Circular

Depart: 7.30pm Meet at: Burley Woodhead Village Green, top of Moor Lane.
This high level circular walk onto Burley and Ilkley Moor visits the Twelve Apostles stone circle with
superb night time views over Wharfedale and Airedale! The route following rough moor paths may be altered given poor weather or bad ground conditions. Essentials are adequate footwear, warm clothing, snacks and a drink, a working torch or head torch and spare batteries. We will aim to return to the Hermit for refreshments by 10.30pm. The minimum age limit is 18. No dogs please.

Saturday August 27 - Weston Hall, Gardens and Church
6 mile 6.5 hrs Moderate Circular

Depart: 9.30 am Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
This mostly level circular day walk will visit Weston Hall, the home for five centuries of the Vavasoure family and their forebears, the Dawson family, as well as the adjoining All Saints Church. The house, which is only occasionally open to the public, is mostly late 16th and early 17th century, and its interesting interior features include the Dragon Room with a plaster ceiling studded with Tudor iconography. Outside features include a 16th century tithe barn, and one of the best preserved freestanding Tudor banqueting halls in the country. The visit will include a guided tour with Mr and Mrs Dawson, an opportunity to explore the gardens, and a visit to the church. A picnic lunch and drinks should be brought. The walk will cross the stepping stones across the Wharfe at Burley Weir providing they are safe to cross, and then gently climb field paths to Askwith. The route follows quiet lanes and paths to reach Weston for about 11.30. The return walk at 2.30 will involve a short walk along Weston Lane, crossing the fields to return to Burley via the stepping stones. We arrive back at around 4.00 pm. If the stepping stones are covered, then the walk will start and finish at the Askwith Arms car park. No dogs please.

Saturday August 27 - Stead circular
4.5 miles 3.5 hrs Easy Circular

Depart: 10.00 Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
This is low level walk to Stead and then to Clevedon House restaurant for refreshments before returning to Burley via Catton Wood. There will be opportunity to learn something of the history of Stead en route, including Stead Hall.

Sunday August 29 - Bleach Mill
3 miles 3 hrs Easy Circular
Leader: David Asher
Depart: 2.00pm Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
The walk celebrates the end of the walking programme contribution to the Festival. Following field paths alongside attractive Carr Beck to reach Bleach Mill for refreshments, walkers can then learn something of the history of the Mill from Sue and Simon Richmond. The return to the village will be along Hag Farm Road. There are no stiles, and paths may be muddy in places. Please wear suitable footwear.
Cost: Free – bring money for refreshments, all profits go to The Teenage Cancer Trust.
