Burley Summer Festival Walks Programme 2026
Booking arrangements:
Festival walks will need to be booked in advance directly with Walkers are Welcome. The booking system is separate to that for booking other Festival events. There are usually 28 places on each walk. No booking is needed on either the Sun Lane Reserve walk on Saturday 22 August or the End of Festival walk on Sunday 30 August.
Booking for walks will not open until Saturday 1 August.
The only opportunity to book in person will be on Saturday 1 August from 10 am to 1pm at the Roundhouse. After that bookings can only be made by text (not by phone call or email).

The West Yorks branch of the Long Distance Walkers Association will lead this high-level walk. The route will include Burley and Bingley Moors via Sunnydale, Micklethwaite and East Morton. Remember to bring sufficient drink, snacks and a picnic lunch. You must have appropriate footwear and outerwear and be prepared for what is a challenging high-level walk with some uneven moorland paths. No dogs please.

Walk 2: Sun Lane Nature Reserve – a biodiversity hot spot

Meet at: Main entrance to Sun Lane Nature Reserve
On the site of the old village tip, Sun Lane is now a wonderful Local Nature Reserve. Peter and Ann Riley will lead the walk to introduce a wide variety of flowers and wildlife now established there. Peter will highlight its importance for biodiversity and the need to carefully protect and nurture what is a unique wildlife resource. Ann will be looking out for bees and bugs, sharing her extensive knowledge of these and other small creatures that live on the reserve. No dogs please.

Saturday August 22
Walk 3: Gallows Hill Nature Reserve, Otley. An accessible walk
1 mile around the Reserve. 2 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 2.00 pm
Options for the meeting point.
Meet at the Jubilee Clock in Otley Market Place at 1.30 pm to walk the 1 mile to Gallows Hill
Alternatively, meet at the Gallows Hill Reserve Car Park to start the walk at 2.00
Confirm where you would like to start the walk when you book.
This is a joint walk with Open Country, the charity which promotes access to the countryside. Their working parties have worked to improve access for all on the Reserve. Volunteers from the Reserve team and Wild Life Friendly Otley will lead the walk and share their extensive knowledge about the rich wildlife flora and fauna on the site. The walk is on good level paths suitable for those with limited mobility or using wheelchair and mobility scooters. Remember to bring sufficient water. No dogs please other than assistance dogs.

Walk 4: Biodiversity at Denton Reserve
4 miles 2.5 hrs walking Moderate Circular
Depart: 9.30 am
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
Return travel to Denton will be by minibus. Nick Bailey, one of the owners of the Denton Reserve, will lead the walk to introduce parts of the reserve not previously visited. He will share some of the challenges being faced to improve biodiversity and plans for the future. Remember to bring enough to drink and wear suitable footwear and clothing. Some of the walking will be on rough ground. No dogs please.
The aim is to return to Burley by 1pm.

Walk 5: The Mills of Burley
2.5 miles 2 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 2.00 pm
Meet at: Roundhouse, Grange Park
Burley’s mills helped create the foundations of the community that we now live in. This short walk led by Chris Smyth, visits the sites of mills alongside or near the River Wharfe and explores their important contribution to the development of the local economy and community infrastructure. The route is mostly level but may be muddy in places. Remember to bring something to drink.

Walk 6: Menston Heritage Trail

Depart: 10.00 am
Meet at: Menston Railway Station
Members of the Menston Heritage Group will lead a short walk to visit some of the landmark buildings in the village, noting some of its past residents. The walk will finish on Bleach Mill Lane with the option of either walking back to Burley or taking the train. There are places for refreshments in Menston.

Walk 7: Marton Mills, Wharfedale’s last working textile mill
4.5 miles 2.5 hrs walking Moderate Linear
Depart: 2.30 pm
Meet at: Jubilee Clock, Otley Market Place
The walk will follow field paths from Otley to Pool in Wharfedale arriving at Marton Mills by 5.00 pm. There will be time to have a picnic tea before a guided tour of the mill of around 1 ½ hours. Minibus transport will then be provided to return the group back to either Otley or Burley for around 8.00 pm. No dogs please.
Bring refreshments for both the walk and for a picnic tea before the tour.

This short walk on accessible paths will be led by Bruce Brown from Wharfedale Naturalists. It will visit and provide fascinating information about over 40 varieties of trees in and around the centre of Burley, starting in Grange Park, passing through the Village Green to end at Burley House Field. Copies of the Tree Trail guide will be available.

Walk 9: Bronze Age Burley
4 miles 3.5 hrs Moderate Circular
Depart: 1.30 pm
Meet at: Burley Woodhead Village Green at the top of Moor Lane
A walk on Burley Moor to look at some of the lower level archaeological sites around Woofa Bank. It will be co-led by David Asher and Filippa Dobson, a local artist whose work explores the relationship between art and archaeology. Expect some climbing and walking across rough open moorland as well as footpaths. Suitable footwear and clothing essential. Remember to bring enough to drink.
The walk is due to finish by 5.00 pm at the Hermit Inn to meet with Dr Keith Boughey, archaeologist. There will be a chance to handle artefacts from Burley Moor. No dogs please.

Walk 10: Short Walk from Grassington to Hebden and River Wharfe
4.3 miles 2.5 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 9.30 am
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
Return transport by minibus will be shared with a longer walk.
A mostly level walk, the route follows good paths and tracks between Grassington and Hebden before dropping down to the River Wharfe and the Hebden suspension bridge. The return to Grassington will be along the river to Linton Falls before a short climb back into the village. The pace will be leisurely. Please bring a picnic lunch. No dogs please. There will an opportunity for refreshments along the way then again at the end of the walk, as well as time to look around Grassington before meeting up with the other group for the return to Burley.

A higher-level walk across the moors above Grassington, including Yarnbury mine workings. The return route will drop down Hebden Beck to its confluence with the River Wharfe and then follow the river before climbing back into Grassington. Please bring a picnic lunch. No dogs please. There will be opportunity for refreshments at the end of the walk before meeting with the other group for the return to Burley.

Walk 12: Weston Hall, its gardens and church
5.5 miles 2.5 hrs walking Moderate Circular / Linear
Depart: 10.00 am
Meet at: Jubilee Clock, Otley Market Place
The walk starts in Otley Market Place and follows the Six Dales Trail route towards Clifton, passing through the community-owned Weston Woods. Weston Hall, dates from the late 16th century with many interesting features. The owners, Mr and Mrs Dawson, will offer a guided tour to the house, the gardens and nearby All Saints Church. For the return walk there will be an option to directly return to Burley via the stepping stones if safe to cross. Otherwise, the return will be across Weston Hall’s parkland to Otley. Please bring a picnic and something to drink. No dogs please.

Walk 13: Baildon to Esholt and Denso Marston Reserve

Depart: 9.33 am train from Burley Station to Baildon
Meet at: Burley Station car park by 9.20 am
A walk to visit Esholt and the Denso Marston Nature Reserve, with a guided tour of the site. This mostly level walk starting at Baildon railway station follows riverside, field, tow path and woodland paths. There are several stiles.
Please bring a picnic for a break in Esholt where refreshments are also available. Remember to bring enough water for the walk. Return from Baildon to Burley will be by train.

Walk 14: Night walk across Burley and Ilkley Moors
5 miles 3 hrs walking Strenuous Circular
Depart: 7.30 pm
Meet at: Burley Woodhead Village Green, top of Moor Lane.
This is a high level circular walk across Burley and Ilkley Moors, visiting the Twelve Apostles stone circle with extensive night time views over Wharfedale and Airedale. The route will include rough moor paths and may be altered in poor weather or bad conditions underfoot. Adequate footwear and warm clothing are essential as well as a working torch or head torch. The aim is to return to the Hermit for refreshments by 10.30pm. The minimum age is 18. No dogs please.

This high level route climbs up to Beamsley Beacon via Myddleton Lodge. It then traverses Lippersley Ridge before descending to Burley either via Askwith or Denton, depending on whether the stepping stones are safe to cross. Please bring a picnic lunch and plenty to drink. Footwear and clothing suitable for rough moorland walking is essential.

Walk 16: The Seven Becks of Burley

Depart: 2.00 pm
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
Colin Speakman is a village resident, co-founder of the Dales Way and author of more than 50 books about Yorkshire. He will lead an exploration of seven principal becks as they flow from Burley Moor through Burley to the River Wharfe, reflecting along the way on their impact on the development of the village. This is a low level route with a mid-walk refreshment stop in Stead. We aim to finish by 5.00 pm with refreshments at the Red Lion. Remember to bring something to drink during the walk.

Sunday August 30
Walk 17: End of Festival Walk along the River Wharfe
2.5 miles 1.5 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 2.00 pm
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
After going along Main Street the route heads for the river via Leatherbank to Burley Weir. Going along the Goit to Greenholme Mill the walk will continue along the riverside path before returning to the village via the Corn Mill Pond.
At the end of the walk there will be afternoon tea at Burley Library. Those not walking also welcome. Proceeds to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The walk is fully accessible as far as Greenholme Mills. Those unable to get along the riverside path could take a shorter alternative accessible route to the library via the underpass and Iron Row.

Ever wondered what’s in a church, masjid, mandir or gurdwara? The Bradford Faith Trail offers a unique opportunity to discover a little bit about Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Christian (Roman Catholic and Church of England) faith buildings, about the faiths within and how they link into Bradford’s local community culture and faith heritage. We will be shown round each place of worship by experienced guides. A langar (vegetarian lunch) is provided by members of the Sikh community. The walk from Forster Square Station to the start of the Trail at St. Peter’s church involves a gentle climb up Leeds Road. The trail finishes at Bradford Cathedral at approximately 3.45pm. No dogs allowed.

Walk 16: The Seven Becks of Burley
6 miles 3 hrs walking Easy / Moderate Circular
Depart: 2.00 pm
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
Colin Speakman is a village resident, co-founder of the Dales Way and author of more than 50 books about Yorkshire. He will lead an exploration of seven principal becks as they flow from Burley Moor through Burley to the River Wharfe, reflecting along the way on their impact on the development of the village. This is a low level route with a mid-walk refreshment stop in Stead. We aim to finish by 5.00 pm with refreshments at the Red Lion. Remember to bring something to drink during the walk.

Sunday August 30
Walk 17: End of Festival Walk along the River Wharfe
2.5 miles 1.5 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 2.00 pm
Meet at: The Roundhouse, Grange Park
After going along Main Street the route heads for the river via Leatherbank to Burley Weir. Going along the Goit to Greenholme Mill the walk will continue along the riverside path before returning to the village via the Corn Mill Pond.
At the end of the walk there will be afternoon tea at Burley Library. Those not walking also welcome. Proceeds to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The walk is fully accessible as far as Greenholme Mills. Those unable to get along the riverside path could take a shorter alternative accessible route to the library via the underpass and Iron Row.
Cost: Free – bring money for refreshments.

Walk 18: The Bradford Faith Trail
3 miles 1.5 hrs walking Easy Circular
Depart: 8.30 am from Burley by train,
or meet the group at 10.00 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Bradford

Ever wondered what’s in a church, masjid, mandir or gurdwara? The Bradford Faith Trail offers a unique opportunity to discover a little bit about Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Christian (Roman Catholic and Church of England) faith buildings, about the faiths within and how they link into Bradford’s local community culture and faith heritage. We will be shown round each place of worship by experienced guides. A langar (vegetarian lunch) is provided by members of the Sikh community. The walk from Forster Square Station to the start of the Trail at St. Peter’s church involves a gentle climb up Leeds Road. The trail finishes at Bradford Cathedral at approximately 3.45pm. No dogs allowed.
