October 2020
Since we restarted our booked walking programme in August, walks have been well attended within the numbers allowed under the current Covid restrictions. We have continued to follow advice from national Walkers are Welcome, from Ramblers UK and from the Long Distance Walkers Association.
Now that Bradford MDC has been designated as a Tier 2 council, we know that we can continue to organise walks, at least for the time being. This is because they are viewed as organised outdoor physical activities. But of course either restrictions or advice could change at short notice. So we will try to give as much notice as possible if we find we have to cancel a walk.
If you would like to book a place on one of the next two walks, please send an email to the usual address – [email protected]. We will then confirm if a place is available. If you find you can’t make the walk please let us know as soon as possible.
Sunday walk on 18 October – Reva Hill
This will be a high level five mile circular walk to Reva Hill on Burley Moor. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 and we aim to be back in the village by 1.00. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
After walking up Hag Farm Road, we follow the Ebor Way, crossing Moor Road before climbing steadily up Burley Moor to Crag Top. The path is rocky and steep at times. We then follow good tracks past the old rifle range to reach the highest point on Reva Hill with good views over Airedale and beyond. The return to Burley is via Stocks Hill and Green Lane. En-route there will be a short break, so you are welcome to bring some refreshments. There are kissing gates and a couple of ‘squeeze’ stiles on the walk.
Friday walk on 6 November – Menston circular
This three-mile walk is a low level visit to Menston. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 and we aim to be back in the village for 12.00. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
After crossing the new Coldstone Beck bridge, we follow the beck across fields to Bleach Mill Lane. Walking along this attractive lane into Menston, we then return to Burley via Menston Old Lane, field paths and the old railway line. Paths are level but likely to be muddy in places. There are a number of kissing gates but no stiles.
Future short walks:
Sunday 15 November - 5 miles
Friday 4 December – 3 miles
Sunday 20 December – 5 miles
We will take bookings for these later.
Longer walks
The next two walks will be Sunday 25 October and Sunday 29 November. Details of arrangements will be sent soon to everyone already signed up for longer walks. If you would also like further information contact Simon via [email protected]. Both walks will start at 10.00 from Burley Station, be between 8 and 10 miles in nearby upland areas, and include a stop for a picnic lunch.
Grant from Bradford Council
We have been successful in getting a grant for equipment to help communities enhance their green spaces. With this we will be able to buy folding litter pickers, gloves, hi-viz vests and some tools. This will help us safely collect litter and remove any debris across paths (including discarded barbed wire) that we come across during guided walks and working parties. We hope this will be a contribution to litter picking activity in and around the village.
Walking leaflets
Finally, a reminder where you can buy our three leaflets of circular walks from the Roundhouse. Priced at £1.50, they are sold in the village at Cohens the Chemist, Dacres Estate Agents and the AM/PM Convenience store / Post Office; in Ilkley at the Grove Bookshop and Just Books; in Otley at Mountseys Stationers and Just Books. Our very readable Welcome Way booklet is also on sale at £5.99 from most sources.
