January 2020
Happy New Year to everyone. We look forward to you joining us on some of our walks in the coming year, starting with two walks in January.
Walking Poles
If you have walking poles remember to bring them with you on the walks. At this time of year many paths are muddy and poles can be very helpful to safely negotiate slippery slopes. They are also good for balance when crossing some of the becks up on the moor.
Dogs
Dogs are welcome on all our walks, unless stated not. For insurance purposes they need to stay on a fixed lead throughout the walk and owners should have the required third-party insurance. Please ask if you have any queries about this. Pet insurance usually includes this cover or it is offered as part of membership of the Dogs Trust. https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/get-involved/membership/
Friday walk on 3 January
The first Friday walk for 2020 is a low level 3-mile route around Stead. Meet as usual at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. After passing Scalebor Park we go along tracks and field paths to Stead Lane. We then follow the lane past Dog Kennel Farm to reach Catton Wood, returning to Burley across the Sun Lane level crossing. The aim is to get to the Red Lion for refreshments about 11.45. The route should be mostly dry except for the field path down to the railway line which usually has some muddy patches. There are no stiles.
Sunday walk on 19 January
This will be a 4.6 mile higher level walk following the edge of Burley Moor towards the Cow and Calf before dropping down to Clevedon House for refreshments. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Walking up Moor Lane, we use the Moor Road footpath to reach Burley Moor. Climbing quite steeply up the side of Coldstone Beck (with stops as needed), we then follow the Ebor Way to within sight of the Cow and Calf before gently descending to Moor Road and along farm tracks to Clevedon House. The return walk passes Catton Wood on the way back to Burley. There are no stiles.
Litter pick walk
We are in discussion with the Plastic Free Burley group about the possibility of a joint walk to collect litter as we walk along paths in and around the village. More details to follow.
Footpath maintenance agreement with North Yorkshire
Recently Burley Walkers are Welcome has come to an agreement with North Yorkshire County Council to take on oversight of the footpaths near to the north bank of the river, with a view to maintaining them as necessary. These are around Askwith and Weston and are often used on guided walks during the summer festival and on our monthly walks.
The route of the Welcome Way long distance path also runs through this area. This is a joint project with neighbouring Walker are Welcome groups. We have now surveyed all the stiles on the route between Weston and Ben Rhydding to assess their condition. £500 has already been allocated from the Welcome Way group’s reserves to replace some of these stiles with gates. As part of the agreement with North Yorkshire we are planning working parties in 2020. More details to follow.
Working party tools
Up to now our working parties have relied on the generosity of volunteers bringing their own tools or using those from Lower Wharfedale Ramblers when they work with us on installing gates. We are looking at the possibility of finding funding for some essential tools such as loppers, grass hooks etc to help us with footpath maintenance.
