Sunday walk on 14 April
*This month’s Sunday walk is a week earlier than usual to avoid the Easter weekend.
Meet at Burley Station at 9.45 in time to get tickets and catch the 10.00am train to Guiseley to start the walk.
All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
From Guiseley station, we will walk along Netherfield Road and Ings Avenue then across fields to the White Cross roundabout. Climbing the field footpath adjacent to the Tranmere Estate we will reach Odda Hill with views across Wharfedale and the Chevin. We will then drop down to High Royds Hall and Derry Hill before heading to Bleach Mill for refreshments. We will return to Burley along Hag Farm Road. There are six stiles on the route and two short stretches of road walking. Paths may be muddy in places.
Friday walk on 3 May
This is a low level walk, just over 3 miles long, crossing the River Wharfe by the stepping stones to visit the southern edge of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
After going down Station Road and Main Street, we will walk down Leatherbank to reach Burley Weir and the stepping stones. Going up the gently sloping field to reach Quaker Cottage and Askwith we will go along Main Street before dropping back down to the stepping stones. There are views across the river towards Burley and Ilkley Moors throughout the walk. Refreshments will be at the Coffee Station, arriving about 11.45. There is one step stile, and paths may be muddy in places.
If the stepping stones are not passable on the day we will take an alternative route on this side of the river.
Long walk on Saturday 1 June
Thanks to everyone who came on our first longer walk of 8 miles. Thirteen of us braved some chilly conditions to get stunning views across Airedale and Wharfedale from the top of Burley Moor.
Please note that the date of the next longer walk is changed to Saturday 1 June due to work commitments. More details of the route later. If you would like to come or want more information, contact Simon Archer on burleywalkersarewelcome @gmail.com.
Dogs on fixed leads will be normally allowed on longer walks as long as the owners have the required insurance. There may be exceptions on routes not allowed for dogs.
Working parties:
Robin Hole: Thank you to the ten volunteers for the working party at Robin Hole on April 1. Everyone worked hard to create the flight of steps by lunchtime. The footpath is now marked from the base of the steps going up from Moor Road and from the top at the layby near the Moor gate.
Cattle arch gates: The Network Rail application to close the level crossing near to Holme Grove and to re-route the footpath has been approved. This means a joint working party with Lower Wharfedale Ramblers can now go ahead to install a kissing and a self-closing gate underneath the nearby cattle arch. At the same time the footpath surface near to the gates will be improved.
Arrangements for the working party are not yet confirmed but possible dates are Friday 17 May, Monday 20 May, Monday 17 June or Monday 24 June. If you are interested in contributing, please let me know with your availability for these dates. Estimated time to complete the work is from 9.30 until early afternoon.
Change of venue for Walkers are Welcome AGM on 15 May
Our fifth AGM will now be held in the Scarecrow room at the Red Lion on Wednesday 15 May, as the Library refurbishment will not be finished . All other arrangements stay the same: the AGM starts at 7.30 with Richard Smith from Lower Wharfedale Ramblers as the speaker. He will be talking about the Ramblers campaign to recover lost footpaths before the deadline of 2026. We hope you can come.
