December 2017 News
Sunday 17 December walk
Our final walk for 2017 will be slightly shorter than usual at 4.5 miles to allow for our seasonal visit to Bleach Mill. As usual we will start from Burley Station at 10 am. All welcome. Just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
The route is mostly level or with gentle gradients. It will no doubt be muddy in places. There are a couple of low step stiles.
We will walk to Dog Kennel Farm in Stead along field paths and Stead Lane, then one of the paths ‘reclaimed’ by our working party last June. After crossing Moor Road at Robin Hole the path leads to Coldstone Beck. Skirting the lower edge of Burley Moor along the Ebor Way we arrive at Bleach Mill for refreshments. Return to the village will be along Hag Farm Road, aiming to get to the station for 1pm.
Sue and Simon Richmond have kindly offered the proceeds from our visit towards the cost of our next kissing gate.
Friday 5 January walk
Our second Friday walk will be a mostly level route of around 3 miles on the east side of the village. We will leave Burley station at 10am. All are welcome so just turn up. Dogs on leads are welcome with the required insurance.
From the Station we will join the old railway line to Otley at Heather Rise, then follow it across Menston Old Lane and Bradford Road to reach Otley Golf Course. We will return to the village via Eastfield Lane. En route we can visit the memorial to W.E. Forster in God’s Acre cemetery. We will aim to get to the Red Lion for around 11.45 where we can have hot drinks in their function room.
Kissing gates
We have now have landowner’s consent to install our seventh and eighth kissing gates. These will be on the footpath linking Hag Farm Road with the Hermit. One of the gates will be funded from walkers’ donations together with money raised from our December visit to Bleach Mill. The other will be funded by Bradford Council Countryside Services.
A joint working party with Lower Wharfedale Ramblers is being planned for a weekday in March. If you are interested in helping with installing the gates, please let me know -no technical skills required.
