Sunday 21 May walk
This month’s walk is across the river to Weston which lies in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00am as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs allowed if on a short lead.
Heading through the village we reach Burley Weir via Leatherbank. After crossing the stepping stones, we go up through the fields to Quaker Cottage at the eastern end of Askwith. Walking along Hallam Lane, then down Moor Lane we reach Cockpit Farm tea rooms in Weston. After a short break for refreshments we go briefly along Weston Lane before returning to the Weir via the bridle path and Quaker cottage again. After retracing our steps through the village we aim to arrive back at the station by 1pm.
The 5 mile route is mostly level along field paths, quiet lanes and one short stretch of a sometimes busy minor road. Of the three stiles on the walk, the two near to the stepping stones are not very accessible for larger dogs.
Should the stepping stones be impassable, we will do a different walk on this side of the river then try again to cross in June.
Sunday 18 June walk
For our final walk before the summer break we plan to walk around Burley Woodhead using the recently installed kissing gates then ending with a visit to Sue and Simon Richmond at Bleach Mill, hopefully for refreshments in the sunshine.
Future walks
After a summer break in July and August we will start Sunday walks again on September 17. Other walks up to Christmas are planned on October 15, November 19, and December 17.
New kissing gates
On May 8 volunteers from Burley WaW and Lower Wharfedale Ramblers installed two kissing gates at Stocks Hill on Burley Moor. A third kissing gate is to be installed soon leading onto Menston Old Lane.
Stead footpath working party
On Thursday 15 June a Burley WaW working party is planned to clear bracken and brambles from short stretches of footpath in Stead. The area is close to a gate onto Moor Road and the moor. In all, three stretches have been impassable for some time.
Ideally we are looking for a group of 6 or more volunteers to work in two teams. No experience necessary.
After our recent training some of us will be able to use strimmers on loan from Bradford Council. Other work will be with rakes, secateurs and spades.
Let me know if you are interested in joining what should be a half day session or a little longer.
After Bradford Council has done some further work on drainage and construction of a bridge and a derelict stile has been replaced by one of the landowners, the paths should be open by the summer.
Otley Walking Festival
A reminder that the 17th annual Otley Walking Festival will run from 24 June to 2 July with 47 walks ranging from 1.5 miles to 15 miles. Walks are free (donations to cover running cost invited).
