Sunday walk on 21 October
This month's walk 5 mile walk will be led by Simon Archer, visiting footpaths on the west side of the village towards Ben Rhydding. From Burley Station we will walk up Hag Farm Road, then across the fields and woods towards the Hermit to meet the Ebor Way. Turning right we will walk up to Moor Road onto Burley Moor. Weather permitting; we will then climb up onto the edge of the moor following the Ebor Way towards Ilkley before dropping down to Clevedon House for refreshments. If the weather is poor, we will stick to the lower footpath on Burley Moor to reach Stead Lane, before going across the fields to Clevedon House. Depending on which route we have taken the route to Burley will be timed to return to the station by 1 o’clock.
There is one stile on the lower route via Stead Lane. The moor route can be rocky and possibly muddy in places. Both routes will involve a short deep crossing at Coldstone Beck before reaching the road. There are some steep ascents at the start of the walk but the pace will be moderate.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
Friday walk on 2 November
This 3 mile walk will also be led by Simon Archer. We will head up Moor Lane, past Scalebor Park using tracks and field paths to reach Stead Lane. We will then follow footpaths and bridle paths in Stead before returning to Burley across the railway line near Sun Lane. The walk through the village will use the snickets to reach the Red Lion for refreshments around 11.45.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
Fundraising for the Moor Road footpath
Thank you to everyone who came on the last Sunday walk and enjoyed lunch at Bleach Mill. We raised an impressive £230 toward the path project due to everyone’s generosity and that of our hosts, Sue and Simon Richmond. As a final step an application has been made to Burley in Wharfedale Community Trust to reach our target for the £5000 appeal.
Working parties to prepare for the construction of the path
Some preparation is needed before the path can be constructed by Bradford Council Highways Department,
There will be a WAW working party meeting at 10 am on Friday 16th Novembers to clear some of the brambles along where the path will go.
On the morning of Monday 19th November.a further working party will support the work to remove the 9 or 10 trees along the edge of the road that is required before the path can be laid.
(This date may change to another day that week depending on weather conditions).
Tree surgery will be undertaken by Michael Smith and colleagues from the Bingley Partnership. Some of you will have walked with Michael on the Gamekeepers Walk during the summer festival.
A number of volunteers are needed on both days to help with this clearance work and with some occasional traffic management. If you are interested please get in touch with Simon Archer on [email protected].
To compensate for the loss of the trees that will need to be removed we are looking at ways of replacing them in the area of woodland near to the path.
