December 2018
Seasons greetings to everyone.
We hope you have plenty of opportunity to get out and about over the Christmas period.
Sunday walk on 16 December
To end the year our final walk will be 4 miles to Bleach Mill along field paths towards Guiseley. After following the old railway line towards Otley, we will cross Acrecliffe Farm to Ellar Ghyll. Climbing gently up Gill Brow to West Chevin, we will then drop down to cross the A65. After walking through the back lanes of Menston we will go down Bleach Mill Lane to end the walk at Bleach Mill. Walkers can then return to Burley along Hag Farm Road, or stay for refreshments including hot snacks and cakes. As usual, all proceeds will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Meet at Burley Station at 10am as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Friday walk on 4 January 2019
The first 3 mile walk of the year will be on field paths to Menston and along the old railway line to Carlrayne Lane. We will then cross the A65 to reach Ellar Ghyll, Acrecliffe Farm and Otley Golf Course. Following Eastfield Lane back to Burley, we will finish up with refreshments at the Coffee Station.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
Moor Road footpath
You may have seen that the new Moor Road footpath is now open. It was completed on 5th December in time for last week’s Friday walk to use it. Many thanks to the thirteen volunteers who joined one or both of the working parties which cleared the route and helped Michael Smith with tree felling and removal.
Thanks are also due to the funders who made the project possible. These include the Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust, the Parish Council, the Community Trust, and the Long Distance Walkers Association as well as a number of private donations.
Next year further work is planned to construct steps up the steep bank on the path through the wood beyond where the new path finishes. We are also looking at ways of planting some trees in the wood to replace those that had to be removed along the roadside.
Proposed footpath diversion
If you have walked the field paths between Burley and Menston you may have seen the Bradford Council notices about the proposed closure of the railway level crossing and diversion of the path underneath the nearby cattle arch. Changes to the line of footpaths either side of the railway line are also planned. Walkers are Welcome have broadly supported the changes as they will improve safety and access. Although the official deadline for comment has passed, late submissions are likely to be accepted and considered. If you would like to make comment contact Fiona Plane to discuss on 01274 431018 or [email protected]
