June 2018
Sunday walk on 17 June
This month's walk is slightly longer than usual at 5.7 miles. This is so we can follow up an invitation made during last year’s Summer Festival walk to Ben Rhydding Nature Reserve for a return visit when the orchids are in flower. Steve Parkes, coordinator for the volunteer group who manage the reserve, will be on hand on Sunday to show us the best places to view this year’s orchids as well as highlight anything else of interest on the site. There should be a good display this year.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
We go along Southfield Road passing the Sun Lane Reserve to access the path to the A65, Crossing over, we will meet Steve who will walk us through the reserve to the orchids. Back over the A65 we then cross fields and go through snickets before walking up Ben Rhydding Drive. We will reach Clevedon House for refreshments at around 12.15. The aim is to be back at the station slightly later than usual - between 1.15 and 1.30.
Friday walk on 6 July
The next Friday walk will be a 3.3 mile circular walk on the north side of the river to Askwith and back via the stepping stones. This is probably the best time of the year to reliably and safely cross the river, although there will be an alternative route available just in case.
We will leave Burley Station at 10.00. All are welcome, so just turn up. Dogs on leads are welcome with the required insurance.
The route uses lanes and field paths that are mostly well drained. There is one stile en route and a short stretch of road walking along Main Street in Askwith.
For those anxious about using the stepping stones we will go carefully and support is available for anyone crossing them for the first time. At the end of the walk we will have refreshments at the Coffee Station, arriving there about 11.45.
Donations to Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue
Thank you to everyone who came to our 4th AGM in May. David Dennis MBE gave a talk as promised about the work of the Fell Rescue Team which covers our area as well as Upper Wharfedale. Due to everyone's generosity at the meeting, we were able to make a donation of £107 to support the work of the team.
Working party 21 May
Thanks are due to the eleven volunteers who attended the working party in Stead last month. Despite everyone being new to step building, we surprised ourselves and probably Richard Perham from Countryside Services by creating two excellent sets of steps. This now completes the work started last year on opening up a derelict stretch of path.
The path can be accessed from the Moor Road to Ilkley by going through the new farm gate then taking the left fork towards Stead.
Burley Summer Festival 18 - 27 August
This year we are contributing 14 guided walks to the Summer Festival. These include a visit to a brewery, a bee inspired family activity trail and a night walk onto Burley moor. Walks range from a full day to half day, from 1.5 to 11 miles. Full details will be available in the festival booklet to be distributed to all households in early July. Bookings can be made from July 16 in person or online. For more information visit the Festival website www.burleysummerfestival.org/
