May 2019
Sunday walk on 19 May
For this 5 mile walk we will cross the stepping stones to walk within the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the countryside beyond Askwith. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. We will go down Leatherbank to the river then cross the stepping stones to go up through the fields to Quaker Cottage and Askwith. Passing through the village, we will walk alongside East Beck to Town Head before crossing fields to Scales House Farm. We then return to Askwith along Hall Lane for refreshments at the re-opened Askwith Arms before returning to the stepping stones via the bridleway, arriving back on Burley Main Street by 1pm. The walk will be mainly on field paths with a small number of stiles. There will be some gentle gradients and possible muddy patches around gateways. If the stepping stones are impassable on the day there will be an alternative walk onto Burley Moor.
Friday walk on 7 June
We will not make another attempt this month to cross the stepping stones but maybe in July. So for this 3 mile walk we will head towards Otley along the old railway line. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. Accessing the railway line at Heather Rise, we will walk along as far as Otley Golf Course before crossing fields to Launds House Farm, After crossing the main road we will walk back to Burley alongside the river then under the underpass at Iron Row. Refreshments will be at the Red Lion at about 12.00. The walk is mostly level, on good surfaces with no stiles.
Long walk on Saturday 1 June
This 10 mile all day walk will head for the highest point of Otley Chevin at Surprise View followed by refreshments at the nearby Royalty. Those who have already expressed interest in the longer walks will be getting more information from Simon Archer. If you are also interested in coming contact Simon at burleywalkersarewelcome @gmail.com. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Working parties
Thank you to everyone who volunteered for the working party to install gates at the cattle arch. After it was decided that the unofficial stile under the arch was no longer safe, Bradford Council urgently replaced it a week ago with a gate and kissing gate at either end. However work is still needed on improving the surface between the two gates as well as replacing the stile near to Holme Grove. So the joint working party with Lower Wharfedale Ramblers will go ahead on 17 June. More details will be sent separately to those who have already volunteered. A self-closing gate will also be installed by a joint working party on 24 June at Mount Stead. This will be the 14th gate to be installed in the Burley area over the past 4 years.
5th AGM, Wednesday 15 May at the Red Lion 7.30
A final reminder that the Walkers are Welcome AGM will be this Wednesday at the Red Lion with our guest speaker Richard Smith from Lower Wharfedale Ramblers. His talk will be on ‘Recovering Lost Footpaths’.
Burley Summer Festival walks – Greenholme Mills
The walks programme for the Festival is now confirmed with 14 walks in all. One of the walks will be to visit Greenholme Mills. This will be a uniqueopportunity to look inside parts of the building whilst the development is underway. The walk will be led by Sarah Fisher who used to work in the mill, accompanied by a representative from the development company. We are keen to hear from anyone who also worked at the mill and would like to share memories about their time there. Contact us at [email protected]. You would be welcome to join us on the walk. Let us know if you know someone who has a connection with the mill and might be interested in being involved so we can give them more information.
