March 2017 News
Sunday March 19 walk
Next Sunday’s walk is around 5 miles visiting the east side of the village.
Meet at the station at 10am. All Welcome. Just turn up.
From the station we head to Eastfield Lane via Burley House Field. Crossing Otley Golf Course we walk back along the old railway line from Otley to Burley via God’s Acre. This is part of the proposed Greenway route. After crossing the railway line we go alongside Carr Beck up to Bleach Mill for refreshments.
We aim to get back to the station for 1pm.
Dogs are welcome on the walk if kept on a lead and if you have your own public liability insurance.
If you have any questions about the walk please contact me on 07551 959494.

Sunday April 23 walk
Please note that this is the fourth Sunday in the month to avoid the Easter weekend. The walk will head up onto Burley Moor to visit the Bronze Age burial cairns of Little and Great Skirtful of Stones.
Burley Walkers are Welcome AGM 7.30 pm Wednesday May 10
You are invited to our AGM in May.
As last year it will be at the Red Lion. Our speaker will be Danny Jackson, Manager of Bradford Countryside Services. He has responsibility for footpaths in the Bradford District.
Please come with your suggestions for improvements to public footpaths in our area.
Path improvements
Work was carried out in February on the Welcome Way footpath near Horncliffe Well. Volunteers from Burley and Otley Walkers are Welcome worked with staff from Bradford Council Countryside Services to install three bridges. Since then they have been put to good use during the first Marathon Plus run along the Welcome Way with over 100 runners taking part.
A further two working parties are planned.
The first in late April or early May will be to install two kissing gates at Stocks Hill in Burley Woodhead.
The second one later in May or early June will be to clear bracken and brambles to bring back into use a lost footpath linking Stead with the Moor.
If you would like to join one of these working parties please let me know. No experience needed.
Waymarks
Bradford Council has given us permission to replace any existing waymarks that are damaged or have gone missing. These are the yellow round discs which mark the route of public footpaths. We can also suggest places for new waymarks.
So far we have replaced about 12 and identified sites for a further 11 where a waymark would improve footpath navigation. Bradford Council will now ask permission from landowners before they can be placed.
Please let us know if you have any suggestions for replacing waymarks or for new sites.
Planning application affecting a footpath leading onto Hag Farm Road
Bradford Council has received a planning application to build two properties on green belt land adjacent to the footpath running between the Heather Rise cattle arch and Hag Farm Road. This is a much-loved footpath route out of the village.
The plans suggest that part of the footpath would need to be diverted.
Should you wish to comment on this application submissions need to be made to Bradford Council by 30 March 2017.
The application is no 17/00940/OUT.
Burley Summer Festival 2017: Saturday 19 to Monday 28 August
Planning is on-going for walks during the Summer Festival.
Confirmed walks so far include a walk to Weston Hall on Tuesday 22 August when the owner will give a tour of the Hall as well as access to the gardens.
On Wednesday 23 August there will be a 10 mile walk along the first stage of the Yorkshire Heritage Way, a new long distance path linking Bradford with Ripon.
There will also be a number of shorter walks to meet a variety of interests.
If you would like to get involved in leading or supporting this year’s Festival walks please let me know.
