February 2019
Sunday walk on 17 February 2019
Weather permitting this will be a high level 5 mile walk to the edge of Reva Hill on Burley Moor, with a visit to Bleach Mill for refreshments on the way back. Meet at Burley Station at 10am as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Starting off along Hag Farm Road, we will then climb on paths up to the Hermit pub. Crossing over Moor Road we will go across the fields to Stocks Hill, before gently climbing southwards over Burley Moor to the disused Rifle Range. We will then drop down to Bleach Mill via Green Lane, aiming to arrive by 12.15. The return to the village will be along Hag Farm Road. There are a number of stiles on the route (not all are dog friendly) and three short steep sections which can be taken slowly. If the weather is bad we can take a lower level route.
Friday walk on 1 March 2019
Our Friday walk is a low level walk, just over 3 miles long, heading first towards Stead, before returning to Burley via Hag Farm and Carr Beck. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
After walking up Moor Lane, we will go across the fields to reach Stead Lane before turning east to go along the new Moor Road footpath onto part of the Ebor Way. Passing Hag Farm, we will return to Burley alongside Carr Beck, reaching the Coffee Station for refreshments about 11.45. The field paths or tracks are good with possibly some short muddy stretches. On the last section there are 2 or 3 stiles dependent on the route which we can decide on the day.
New longer walks programme
Thanks to everyone who has shown interest in the new longer walks programme. The first 8 mile circular walk on Sunday 31 March will be on Burley Moor. If you would like to come, contact Simon Archer on [email protected] if you haven’t done so yet.
Walking with Wheels around Burley
We have begun to look at 6 possible routes in and around the village that can be accessible for anyone using various sorts of wheels - from buggies, children’s scooters and balance bikes through to wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
A survey is planned to collect detailed information about what conditions anyone with restricted mobility can expect on each walk.
In collaboration with the Community Trust and other village groups we also hope to identify where improvements could make footpaths around the village both safe and accessible for all.
If you would like to help with the survey contact Ann Greenhough at [email protected]
Walkers are Welcome display in Burley Community Library
Another good reason to visit Burley Library is that we now have a Walkers are Welcome display on the back wall. Featuring a customised 1:25,000 scale Ordnance Survey map centred on Burley, the display will give up to date information about our walks and working parties. You can also buy the Walkers are Welcome leaflets and guides.
Working parties
Thanks to those who have offered to help install two self-closing gates near to Audley Clevedon in Ben Rhydding on Friday 8 March.
Thanks also to those who have volunteered to build steps near to the Moor Road footpath on Monday April 1. If anyone else is interested, please let us know, or phone David on 07551 959494 for more information.
