A new footpath for Burley!
We now have a newly designated public footpath on the edge of the village. This path runs from the south side of the Heather Rise cattle arch, follows the edge of the railway line embankment eastwards towards Otley then picks up the recently re-routed path at the next cattle arch towards Menston. The new path is part of a network of paths created following the closure of the Holme Grove level crossing. A bridge together with some steps can now be constructed over Coldstone Beck. Hopefully this will be before the summer. In the meantime, take care crossing the beck, especially if water levels are high.

Please ask if you have any queries about this. Pet insurance usually includes this cover or it is offered as part of membership of the Dogs Trust. https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/get-involved/membership/

Volunteers needed for Walking with Wheels working party on Tuesday 28 April
As the next step in our Walking with Wheels project we are to have our first joint working party with Open Country.
Get in touch if you would like to help on 28 April. The task will be to improve the surface of the upper part of Hag Farm Road by filling in some of the increasing number of potholes. Open Country working parties regularly improve footpaths around Yorkshire and will bring with them some of their specialist equipment. The aim is to make a more accessible route out into the countryside for people with limited mobility, including wheelchair and mobility scooter users. It will also be of benefit to families with buggies, scooters and children’s bikes as well as all who regularly walk or run along Hag Farm Road. We also have landowner’s permission to place a bench at a viewpoint towards the end of the area to be improved. Let us know if you would like to make a donation towards the cost of a bench which would be similar to those already placed around the village. Open Country is a Yorkshire wide charity based in Harrogate which promotes improving access to the countryside for those with disabilities or limited mobility.

Future working parties
Through Countryside Services, agreement has been reached with landowners around Burley to replace four further stiles with gates. Let us know if you would like to know dates for working parties once these are confirmed.
Working party tools
We would like to thank Burley Summer Festival Committee for a generous grant of £250 to Walkers are Welcome. This means we can now buy the tools we need for our work to maintain and improve paths in and around Burley. Morten's of Ilkley have kindly offered to provide the tools at a discounted price so we can get best value from the grant. We are currently looking for a secure home for the tools. If anyone can offer space to store them, please ask for more information about what would be involved.
