December 2019
Season’s greetings to everyone.
Friday walk on 6 December
This Friday’s walk is a mostly level 3.4 mile walk to Menston. Meet as usual at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. We will head across field paths to Menston Old Lane then along Westbourne Drive and Carl Rayne Lane through Menston. Going through ginnels we will cross over Ellar Ghyll and walk through Acrecliffe Farm. Following the old railway line, we get back to Burley along ginnels and quiet roads to reach the Red Lion for refreshments, around 12.00. Paths will be muddy in places, and there are a couple of wooden step stiles.
Sunday walk on 15 December
Our final Sunday walk of the year will be slightly shorter than usual to allow for a longer lunch stop at Bleach Mill for seasonal refreshments. The 4.25 mile higher level walk follows the edge of Burley Moor. Meet as usual at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. We will follow Hag Farm Road and then field footpaths to reach the Ebor Way. Turning towards Ilkley, we will follow the Moor Road footpath to reach Burley Moor, climbing up past Barks Crag to the track at Crag Top. Following the track to Stocks Hill, we will drop down to Green Lane, and alongside Carr Beck to Bleach Mill. Paths will muddy in places, with a couple of short steep ascents which we can take slowly. There are four stiles.
2020 walks
Our first two walks in the New Year will be on Friday 3 January, followed by Sunday 19 January. Details to follow.
Burley Bridge Hike Saturday 24th October 2020
This is advance notice of a major event by the Burley Bridge Association to fundraise and promote the campaign for the bridge. The Burley Bridge Hike, a Long Distance Walkers Association challenge walk of 20.5 miles, crosses Burley and Ilkley Moors. It was a popular annual event until about ten years ago, attracting walkers and runners from far and wide. This one-off revival will need a number of volunteers for marshalling and providing refreshments. If you are interested in helping, please get in touch.
