June 2019
Sunday 16 June – Orchids in Ben Rhydding
This month's walk, to be led by John Smith, is slightly longer than usual at 5.7 miles. This is so we can revisit Ben Rhydding Nature Reserve to see the magnificent display of orchids. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up.
*For this walk dogs will not be allowed, so apologies to our regular walkers with dogs. There is a high chance of finding cows, some with young calves, in one or more of the fields along the route.
Leaving the village along Southfield Road we pass the Sun Lane nature reserve to reach the path to the A65. Crossing over, we will meet Steve Parkes at the ‘Burley entrance’ to the reserve, who will walk us through the reserve to the orchids. Back over the A65 we then cross fields and go through snickets before walking up Ben Rhydding Drive. We aim to leave the reserve at about 11.15 in order to reach Clevedon House for refreshments soon after 12.00, arriving back in Burley by 1.15
Friday 5 July – Askwith circular
This 3 mile walk will be to Askwith, Meet at Burley Station at 10.00. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Walking to Burley Weir via Iron Row, Greenholme Mill and the Goit, we will cross the stepping stones and walk up the bridleway to Askwith. Turning right along Main Street, we will return to Burley Weir on farm tracks and field paths, passing Quaker Cottage. We will aim to be at the Red Lion for refreshments at about 12.00. The walk will involve a gradual ascent and descent and a short stretch of road walking. There is one stile. If the stepping stones are not safe to cross, we will take an alternative route towards Stead.
Long walk on Saturday 20 July
Details will be in the next newsletter. If you are interested in coming, contact Simon at [email protected] Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Working parties
On Monday 17 June we will be working with Lower Wharfedale Ramblers to install two kissing gates near Holme Grove together with making some improvements to path surfaces nearby.
On 24 June a self-closing gate will be installed by a joint working party at Mount Stead.
If you have already volunteered you should have been sent details about the arrangements. If not let me know.
Recovering and protecting lost footpaths
If you attended our AGM in May you will have heard Richard Smith’s informative talk on the work he and Ramblers have been doing to identify footpaths that are not currently registered as public rights of way. If you know of any paths in and around Burley that you think might be in this category or you are unsure about their status, then please get in touch. This includes short cuts, ginnels and snickets. The 2026 government deadline for these to become registered is not so far away. It would be sad if paths that have been commonly used for many years are not protected for the future.
Fairfax Singers concert on Saturday 27 June
The latest fundraising concert in aid of the Burley footbridge will feature the Fairfax Singers, a local mixed-voice choir of some 36 members. Their repertoire includes folk songs, spirituals, choral and sacred music as well as items by contemporary composers. They will be performing at the Methodist Church on Main Street, Burley. Doors open at 7.00 for a 7.30 start. Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Coffee Station and Just Books in Otley and Ilkley or on-line at www.ticketsource.co.uk/burley-bridge-association.
