January 2019
Sunday walk on 20 January
Our first Sunday walk of the year will be 4.6 miles following the edge of Burley Moor towards the Cow and Calf before dropping down to Clevedon House for refreshments. Walking up Moor Lane, we use the new Moor Road footpath en route to Burley Moor. Climbing quite steeply up the side of Coldstone Beck (taking it slowly), we then follow the Ebor Way to within sight of the Cow and Calf before gently descending to Clevedon House.
In appreciation for WAW helping to resolve a longstanding issue about replacement of two nearby stiles, all the group is offered complimentary tea and filter coffee. We will then finish the walk along field paths back to Burley.
Meet at Burley Station at 10am as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Friday walk on 1 February 2019
This 3 mile walk is level throughout, heading eastwards towards Otley then back to Burley along the river. From the station we head down Prospect Road to Burley House Field then across the A65 to Eastfield Lane. Walking alongside Mickle Ings Beck, we will then drop down to the river to walk back to Burley and refreshments at The Coffee Station. There are no stiles.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
New longer walks programme
As an addition to the 3 and 5 mile monthly walks, we are proposing to try some 7 to 10 mile guided walks during 2019. Like the existing programme, walks will start at Burley Station at 10am on the following dates: Sunday 31 March; Sunday 2 June; Sunday 21 July. More walks may be planned during the autumn depending on feedback. Details of routes will be publicised in future emails. The walks could be circular or linear using public transport, or maybe cars. Walkers will need to indicate in advance if they want to join a walk.
If you are interested, contact Simon Archer at [email protected].
Walking with Wheels around Burley
We are planning a new project to bring together some of the best local walking routes suitable for those who use various sorts of wheels to get around. This includes wheelchairs and mobility scooters as well as children’s buggies, balance bikes and scooters.
To make a start we would like to collect people’s favourite circular or one way routes around the village and into the countryside.
Before putting these into a new walking leaflet we plan to do a survey so we can give detailed information about what to expect on each route for those using wheels or with limited mobility. We also hope to work with the Community Trust and other village groups to identify where improvements could make footpaths around the village both safe and accessible for all.
If you would like to help with the project please contact Ann Greenhough at [email protected] for more information.
Working parties
The first working party of the year will be to install two self-closing gates near to Clevedon House, Ben Rhydding. This will then make the route to Burley stile free. We will be working jointly with the Lower Wharfedale Ramblers footpath group. Just two more volunteers are needed. If you are interested please get in touch with your availability. The work should be completed in one long morning session. Possible dates are Friday I, 8 or 22 March.
Our second working party will be to build a set of steps near to the new Moor Road footpath. This will improve access on the path leading up through the trees from Coldstone Beck bridge onto Burley Moor. The proposed date is Monday 1 April for what is likely to be a full day’s work. We will need a minimum of six volunteers. Let us know if you are interested.
Proposed closure of level crossing and footpath diversion
The Network Rail application to close the level crossing near to Holme Grove, and associated plans for footpath diversion, is being heard at Bradford Magistrates Court on Friday 15 March. If you would like to know more please get in touch with me.
Dales Bus Fundraiser Friday 1 February
Friends of Dales Bus are having a fundraising event at Coopers Bar and Brasserie on Friday 1 February. The concert features the Hall Brothers and John Carey, Keeper’s Wood, Rum Doodle, and Muppett.
