January 2018
Sunday 21 January walk
Our first walk of 2018 will be a four mile circular walk to the edge of Ben Rhydding, led by Simon Archer. As usual we will start from Burley Station at 10.00. All are welcome. Just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. The route uses tracks, field paths and lanes and there are a couple of stiles. There are two short stretches of field paths that are likely to be muddy. After walking along Sun Lane to the A65, there is a short stretch by the roadside before taking a track up to Clevedon House for refreshments. We will return through Stead, aiming to get back to the station by 1pm.
Friday 2 February walk
Our second Friday walk of 2018 will be just over 3 miles. It will be a mostly level route on the east side of the village. We will leave Burley station at 10am. All are welcome so just turn up. Dogs on leads are welcome with the required insurance.
The route mostly uses tracks and lanes with one section of field path which will be muddy in places. There is one low stone step stile. From the station we will walk up Hag Farm Road and then follow the Ebor Way along Bleach Mill Lane to Menston. Cutting through back roads to reach Menston Old Lane, we will return to Burley using a recently installed kissing gate. We will aim to get to the Red Lion for around 11.45 where we can have hot drinks.
Funding for kissing gates
At their January meeting Burley in Wharfedale Community Trust generously agreed a grant of £350 to cover the full cost of installing a kissing gate. Together with funding matched by Bradford Council we can now go ahead with replacing two stiles with kissing gates on the footpath from Hag Farm Road to the Hermit.
If you would like to find out more about the valuable work of the Community Trust or support it by becoming a member, look at the website at www.burleycommunitytrust.org
As reported in our last email, Simon and Sue Richmond kindly donated the proceeds from our December visit to Bleach Mill to our kissing gate fund. This came to an impressive £73. Together with other donations this means we can now plan for our ninth and tenth stile replacement gates later in the year.
Alfred John Brown Memorial Trail
A new walking trail around Burley has been published on our website, visiting sites associated with Alfred John Brown, poet and author of walking guides to the Yorkshire Dales. A.J. Brown lived in Burley from 1927 to 1945 where he wrote most of his popular books. Our web guide has lots of interesting historical information and photographs so please have a look.
