September 2018
Sunday walk on 16 September with fundraising lunch for the Moor Road path.
This 5 mile walk will explore the footpaths on the west side of the village. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance
Going along field paths then Stead Lane towards Ben Rhydding, we climb gradually up an old quarry track to the Ebor Way. Turning left towards Burley along the moor edge, we will drop down to the Moor Road bridge over Coldstone Beck.
Taking extra care, we will then walk a short distance along Moor Road where the proposed new footpath will become an alternative route for the Ebor Way and Dales Way link.
After reaching the existing tarmac footpath we will continue along the Ebor Way with one stile to reach Bleach Mill by 12.00.
On this occasion, the walk will end there for an extended break for refreshments. For those wanting to continue, it an easy mile’s walk down Hag Farm Road to the station.
Sue and Simon Richmond will provide a light lunch (soup, quiche, bacon sandwiches etc) as well as the usual selection of cakes. They will kindly donate all proceeds towards the appeal for the Moor Road path.
If you are not coming on the walk but would still like to come for lunch you will be very welcome. Just let Sue know on 862995 so she has some idea of how many to cater for.
Friday walk on 5 October
This 3 mile walk will follow the proposed Greenway route along the old railway line, east toward Otley. We will cross Otley golf course to reach Otley Old Road, and then follow the riverside path back to Greenholme Mills. We will reach the Red Lion about 11.45 for refreshments. The route is mostly level, except for some short steep slopes up and down the old railway embankment. There are no stiles.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
Moor Road footpath
Through donations, grants and pledges we have now raised £4650 towards our £5,000 target. We are optimistic that we will soon raise the remaining money needed. Bradford Highways have confirmed they can go ahead with the project this autumn and a meeting is planned soon to finalise the details.
Burley Summer Festival 18 - 27 August
Thank you to everyone who came on one or more of our fourteen Festival walks. We hope you enjoyed them.
There were over 320 attendances from around 200 individuals, so a large increase to last year’s Festival.
If you have any feedback, including suggestions for walks next year or walks you would like repeated please let us know.
Burley Bridge fundraising events
The other organisation for walkers (and runners) in the village, the Burley Bridge Association, has started fundraising for construction of the footbridge near Burley Weir.
A number of music events are planned:
On Saturday 29 September, Leeds indie rock group Sure Fire Affair headline an evening of rock and acoustic music at Burley Social Club along with Titan Soul and Me and Dan. Sure Fire Affair’s drummer is Mike Richmond from Bleach Mill.
On Saturday 17 November there is a folk concert at the Queens Hall with Yan Tan Tether, Duncan McFarlane with Anne Brivonesse, and Rum Doodle. All three groups regularly perform at folk festivals and are talented local singers and musicians.
Tickets for both events are £10. For more information and booking visit www.burleybridge.com or www.ticketsource.co.uk/burley-bridge-association
