May 2019
Sunday walk on 20 May
This month’s 5 mile walk will attempt to cross the river so we can visit the lovely countryside between Askwith and Weston. Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
Heading through the village we reach Burley Weir via Leatherbank. After crossing the stepping stones, we go up through the fields to Quaker Cottage at the eastern end of Askwith. Walking along Hallam Lane, then down Moor Lane we reach Cockpit Farm tea rooms in Weston. After a short break for refreshments we go briefly along Weston Lane before retracing our steps via the bridle path and Quaker cottage. After walking back to the village along the Goit we aim to arrive back at the station by 1pm.
The 5 mile route is mostly level along field paths, quiet lanes and one short stretch of a sometimes busy minor road. There are a couple of short gentle gradients.
Of the three stiles on the walk, the one nearer to the stepping stones could be difficult for larger dogs. Field paths could be muddy in places.
Should the stepping stones be impassable or at risk of being covered for the return trip, we will walk instead between Burley and Ben Rhydding and try again on another occasion. For anyone who is a ‘first-timer’ over the stones or in any way anxious about crossing them, we will take them slowly and assistance will be available.
Friday walk on 1 June
The next Friday walk will be led by Simon Archer, and walk the field paths to and from Stead It will be three miles and mostly level, with one short steep field descent. There are no stiles.
We will leave Burley Station at 10.00. All are welcome, so just turn up. Dogs on leads are welcome with the required insurance.
The route uses tracks and field paths that may be muddy in places. After walking past Scalebor recreation ground we will gently ascend paths and farm tracks to Stead. We will return to Burley past Catton Wood and the railway crossing at Sun Lane. We will walk through snickets to reach the Red Lion for refreshments at about 11.45.
Walkers are Welcome AGM and talk
A reminder that our fourth AGM will be at Burley Library on Wednesday 16 May at 7.30. Following a short business meeting, our speaker this year will be David Dennis MBE from Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue. David has a wealth of stories to tell from his 39 years of service to UWFR, and will also be able to give advice about how to stay safe when walking the hills. Refreshments will be provided. All are invited to what should be a very interesting and informative evening.
Working party 21 May
On Monday 21 May we will be returning to Stead where we worked last year, in order to build two sets of steps, do some strimming and raking, and help drain a short section of very wet path. We will be supervised and supported all day by Richard Stead from Bradford Countryside Services. Thanks to the people that have already indicated they will be able to participate. It would be helpful to have one or two more people, however, so if you fancy assisting in what should be a rewarding and fun day, please get in touch on 01943 862965. No experience is necessary! We will start at 9.30 am and probably finish early to mid-afternoon.
New DalesBus Service to Washburndale and Nidderdale
A new Sunday and Bank Holiday DalesBus service direct from Keighley, Bingley, Saltaire, Shipley and Otley (with connections from Bradford) will provide a link for people living in Airedale and Lower Wharfedale to the fabulous walking country of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The new Nidderdale Rambler 821 will serve no less than three popular Yorkshire walking trails – the Nidderdale Way, the Six Dales Trail and the Dales Way Harrogate Link.
