OCTOBER NEWS
Our Friends mailing list has now grown to more than 140. We look forward to circulating more news about walking in Burley from time to time in the coming months. Any contributions welcome.
September Walk
We had a great start to our programme of Sunday morning walks on 18 September, with 16 people walking in beautiful sunshine via Sun Lane to Clevedon House restaurant for morning refreshments returning via Stead.
Next Walk: Sunday 16 October
Our next walk is on Sunday 16 October, meeting at 10.00 am at Burley station car park. Everyone welcome. Just turn up.
This time we will head eastwards along the river, heading towards Ellar Ghyll before returning via Menston. About five miles in all. After a refreshment stop at Bleach Mill we aim to return to the station by 1.00 pm. The route is mostly on field paths and tracks with one short steep section up steps. There are a couple of stiles en route. Given the time of year, please come prepared with footwear in case of mud!

This Thursday: Walkers sing for Burley Bridge!
The Burley Bridge Association is holding a fundraising concert this coming Thursday 6 October at St. Mary’s Parish Church in Burley starting at 7.30. Contemporary and classical music and song will be provided by three groups of local walkers who happen to be also very talented musicians and singers! Tickets cost £10, include refreshments, and can be purchased from the Coffee Station, 70 Main Street Burley, or by calling 01943 863623.
A J Brown: Burley’s forgotten walking author and poet
The biography of the walking bard of Burley, Alfred John Brown, is being launched at the Hermit, Burley Woodhead, on Saturday 15 October from 1pm. The author John White led our 2015 Burley Festival walk to the Hermit with a poetry and prose reading by AJ Brown. He will be displaying information about the life and times of AJ Brown throughout the afternoon, and have copies of his book on AJ Brown fresh off the press. Drop in for a chat and a chance to hear about this champion of the Yorkshire Dales who wrote popular walking guides whilst living in Burley from the 1920s to 1940s.
Burley’s old railway line – a new right of way
Ten years after an application was first lodged, Bradford Council have finally been able to make a submission for planning approval to register the old railway line from Heather Rise to Bradford Road as a public right of way.
Many people in the village have used this path unofficially for decades. Now there is an opportunity to formally secure the route for future generations.
Please take the time to submit support for the application by writing (no on-line facility unfortunately) to: City Solicitor, Legal and Democratic Services, City of Bradford MDC, City Hall, Bradford, BD1 1HY quoting reference LEG/PCD/SPN/73199. Closing date for submissions is 11 November.
Footpath improvements
Following a number of suggestions for improvements to footpaths in and around Burley we will be setting up some working parties this winter. Let us have any more ideas including where way marking and signage is poor.
We are also interested in any proposals for replacing stiles with kissing gates that would improve access, including for dog walkers, so we can alert the Rights of Way team.
