March 2019
Sunday walk on 17 March
This month’s 5 mile walk is moderately high level, visiting Carr Bottom reservoir on Burley Moor before walking along the Ebor Way and dropping down to Clevedon House.
Meet at Burley Station at 10am as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance.
Starting off along Hag Farm Road, we will climb up alongside the Carr Beck ‘ravine’ to reach Moor Road. We will then walk up the length of Green Lane before taking a paved route to the dam at Carr Bottom reservoir. Walking across to the Ebor Way, we will head towards Ilkley before dropping down to Moor Road and then to Clevedon House for refreshments. The return to Burley will be via Catton Wood and the Sun Lane level crossing, using the two recently installed self-closing gates, aiming to arrive about 1pm. There are three stiles on the outward route with some gentle climbing. Paths may be muddy in places.
Friday walk on 5 April
Our Friday walk is a low level walk, just over 3 miles long, heading first up Moor Lane before walking to Stead and then back to Burley via Stead Lane and Scalebor Park.
Meet at Burley Station at 10.00 as usual. All welcome, just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as the owners have the required insurance.
After walking up Moor Lane, we will use the new Moor Road footpath to reach Stead Lane. We will then branch off to climb gently up a field path to reach a viewpoint overlooking Stead. We will return to Stead Lane via Dog Kennel Farm, and then back across field paths to Scalebor Park and Moor Lane. We will have refreshments at the Red Lion, aiming to arrive about 11.45. There is one low step stile, and paths may be muddy in places.
New longer walks programme
Last chance to join the first longer walk on Sunday 31 March. This 8 mile high level circular walk will start at Burley Station at 10.00 and will visit the Twelve Apostles, before returning for refreshments at the Hermit by 3pm. Simon Archer will be in touch shortly with those people who have indicated interest in the longer walks programme to give more details.
If you would like to come or would like more information, contact Simon on burleywalkersarewelcome @gmail.com. Dogs on fixed leads will be normally allowed on longer walks as long as the owners have the required insurance. There may be occasional exceptions where there are landowner restrictions in place (such as on the Devonshire estate).
Walking with Wheels around Burley
We now have an outline of 6 short walks in and around Burley, kindly put together by Phil Green. Potentially they should be suitable for those using various wheels (such as wheelchairs, mobility scooters, children’s buggies, scooters and balance bikes). As the next step we plan to look at each route in more detail to identify any hazards and to look at possible improvements to increase access.
If you, or someone you know, would like to help survey one of the routes, with or without wheels, contact Ann Greenhough at [email protected]
Working parties
On March 8 a joint working party with Lower Wharfedale Ramblers installed two new self-closing gates near to Clevedon House. We have now replaced 10 stiles in all around Burley. These stiles make a stile free route for the first time between Ben Rhydding and Burley. We have also recently had land owner permission to replace a stile with a self-closing gate at nearby Mount Stead, which will create a second stile free route. More details to follow.
Thanks to everyone who has offered to contribute to the 1 April working party which will construct steps at Robin Hole. I will be in touch shortly to confirm arrangements.
Moor Road path celebration
We are having an informal gathering to celebrate the completion of the Moor Road footpath project. This will be on Wednesday 3 April at the Hermit, starting at 7.30. Local residents, donors, volunteers and friends of Burley Walkers are Welcome are invited. Some snack food will be provided. Please come!
Wharfedale Greenway
Following successful negotiations with landowners, a section of the proposed Greenway walking and cycling route from Burley to Otley is now in the ownership of Burley Parish Council. As a result, new access from the old railway line directly onto Bradford Road has recently been created by Countryside Services. Walkers are Welcome have been asked to also help improve access onto Menston Old Lane by creating two sets of steps. More information about this soon.
Walkers are Welcome AGM
Our fifth AGM will be on Wednesday May 15 at Burley Community Library, starting at 7.30. The speaker this year will be Richard Smith from Lower Wharfedale Ramblers, who will be talking about the Ramblers campaign to recover lost footpaths before the deadline of 2026. We hope you can join us.
