March 2018
Sunday walk on 18 March
This walk will be just under five miles, following part of the Ebor Way on Burley Moor and dropping down to Clevedon House for refreshments.
As usual the walk starts from Burley Station at 10 am. All are welcome so just turn up. Dogs on fixed leads are allowed as long as owners have the required insurance. The walk may be varied if the weather conditions are unsuitable.
The route involves a short section of road walking, moor and field paths and lanes. There are two step stiles, one with a dog gate. Field paths are likely to be muddy and the moor path will be uneven in places. The climb up onto Burley Moor is moderately steep, but we will take it very slowly!
We will walk up Moor Lane to Burley Woodhead, and then along Moor Road to Stead Lane following the route of the proposed footpath. We will climb up Burley Moor on the right hand side of Coldstone Beck to join the Ebor Way. We will then drop down a gently descending quarry track to cross Moor Road and then follow the lane to Clevedon House. Following refreshments (inside if necessary!) we will return to Burley via Catton Wood and the Sun Lane level crossing. The aim will be to get back to the station by 1pm.
Friday walk on 6 April
The next Friday walk will follow the route planned for the March walk cancelled because of the bad weather. It will be three miles along the river towards Otley, returning to Burley via Eastfield Lane. It will be a mostly level route with no stiles.
We will leave Burley Station at 10.00. All are welcome, so just turn up. Dogs on leads are welcome with the required insurance.
The route uses tracks and field paths that will be muddy in places. From the station we will walk down Station Road along Iron Row to Greenholme Mills. We will then use the riverside path to reach the junction of Otley Old Road with the A660 before crossing over to walk past Laund House Farm. To return to Burley we go alongside Mickle Ing Beck, then down Eastfield Lane. As the Red Lion will be closed for refurbishment, we will go to the Coffee Station for refreshments at about 11.30. Angela is confident she can accommodate the group inside if the weather isn't good!
Burley Bridge Association
The other main walking focused organisation in Burley, the BBA, is currently having planning applications for a pedestrian bridge near Burley Weir considered for renewal by Bradford and Harrogate Councils. If you would like to comment on the value that you think a bridge would bring to local walkers, please take the time to contribute to the public consultation by both councils. You can access the Bradford application, number 18/00663/OUT at https://www.bradford.gov.uk/planning-and-building-control/planning-applications/view-planning-applications/. The Harrogate application, number 18/00623/OUT will be available to view by the end of the week at https://www.harrogate.gov.uk/planningapplications. As the BBA has now reached agreement with both councils about the potential use of their statutory powers to enable the project to be completed, the campaign is finally moving into the fundraising stage. Burley Festival walk news
The committee is busy planning the contribution to this year's Burley Summer Festival, in liaison with the Festival Committee. As well as repeating some of the most popular walks from last year, we have a number of new walks being proposed. These include a night walk, a children's walk, a Burley Moor walk with a gamekeeper, a walk to a brewery, and a high level walk from Addingham. More details to follow!
